Athlete of the Week: Julie Fabor

Yes, a speed demon, but not necessarily the kind you find tooling down the highway, that’s what this young lady is. You may have watched her on the basketball court last winter as she tirelessly ran up and down the court as the point guard, you know, the quarter back of the team. Well, her coaches appreciate this endurance of hers.

Julie Fabor, graduated senior, has been a sprinter all her life, escaping the clutches of her mom when she was a toddler, as she found her legs. Inheriting her enjoyment of running and sprinting from her mother, Julie has applied this talent to all the sports she plays.
Middle school saw her in the 100 and the relays she ran. She definitely won blue ribbons there.

It was in Middle school that she was on the all Star team in basketball. Last season she and three other teammates were which were invited to go to Junior Nationals last year.

“One of the girls went but I had a soccer tournament,” she said.

Soccer has been her sport since she was five years old. The Grand Mesa Youth Soccer Association got her started. She kept involved in this association and soon found herself on the competitive team, the Fire. She was able to gain more skills as she traveled with her team to places like Denver and Colorado Springs. Co0lorado Springs has acres of soccer fields at the Air Force Academy.

“She is the most amazing girl I’ve seen because she is not only a great athlete, but she is a wonderful person,” Marcella Lucas, superb soccer player herself, said. “She puts a smile on everyone’s face.”

It turns out that Julie started soccer young because her mother encouraged her and coached the team.

“Soccer definitely keeps you in shape,” Julie said. “It allows for creativity in the way you play and have to constantly keep changing as you are aware of what happens around you. You have to think on your feet and not get panicky.”

Julie is proud to have several hat tricks to her credit, (three goals in one game).

One of her great memories is getting to attend the pro soccer games in Denver when she was 13.

“We got to watch the Rapids at least twice,” she said.

As a teen and as an athlete constantly on the move she likes to eat. Her diet includes just about anything she wants. Mashed potatoes with sour cream and butter are her favorite.

As for a favorite pro athlete, Julie chose a basketball player, Allen Iverson because he is a point guard and is fun to watch. She noted that his hair has nothing to do with her noticing him.
For a mentor, Julie stated that her whole family fills that bill.

“They really support my games, have positive things to say and are always there to talk to when I need to talk,” she said.

With a GPA of 4.0 at graduation, Julie will be going on to college to study to be a history teacher and, of course, she’d like to become a coach.

“I love working with kids,” she said.

She worked with them at the Wildcat basketball and soccer camps. She worked as a tutor-mentor in middle school. With Kathy Daniels, her aunt, to set a great example in working with kids, Julie won’t go wrong in doing this.

Look for Julie Fabor, Fruita Canyon Dental’s Athlete of the Week, to be a success in whatever she choses to do.
